Sutter Health Administrative House Supervisor (RN) Nursing Administration in Davis, California

Position Overview:



Directs the operation and supervises personnel in all departments on shifts when management staff are not

present in the facility. Oversees staff to ensure patient/ family care is delivered according to the Sutter

Difference standards.

Principal Accountabilities

Community - Adheres to organizational and legal guidelines when dealing with others, including external

agencies, non-Sutter facilities, media, law-enforcement. Promotes a positive relationship between Sutter

Health and the community in all actions.

Finance - Functions as an effective financial steward in all actions/ decisions, including those related to

patient or family/ employee/ physician satisfaction, staffing and utilization of equipment and supplies.

Identifies when floating between units is necessary and has the authority to adjust staffing numbers and/ or

mix to meet planned and unplanned patient care needs.

Growth - Actively oversees management of the patient/family plan of care throughout the hospitalization to

achieve optimal transition and progression toward discharge for patient/family. Documents shift events for

administrative review. May coordinate admissions, transfers and discharges and have accountability for

patient/bed placement.

People - Represents Nursing/ Hospital Administration in their absence. Supervises all nursing units and is

ultimately responsible for and in charge of all hospital operations in the absence of department managers,

supervisors and Administration. Oversees the activities of the health care team in a professional manner and

according to the Standards of Excellence. Consistently promotes a positive work environment.

Quality- Oversees patient care operations to ensure the consistent delivery of quality, evidence-based patient

care services to all patient populations served. Applies and/ or adheres to hospital policies and procedures,

state and federal regulations and facility/ TJC standards to achieve the best possible patient and family

outcomes. Manages process (legal/ ethical/ physical) upon patient death: notification, pronouncing and

release to proper authority. Ensures supportive spiritual/ social/ psychological/ physical/ environment for

family members.

Service - Serves as a clinical and operational resource to the nursing staff and other departments to ensure

provision of optimal/ culturally appropriate/ collaborative care and services to patients and families. Makes

high-level decisions concerning patient care, internal conflicts and chain of command issues, properly

documenting risk management issues. This may include QARs, disciplinary action, sentinel event

management and other risk management interventions. The incumbent serves as the identified liaison with

physicians, families, other departments/ administration and community agencies.



Education, including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration

Requires a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN or an equivalent combination of formal education, clinical experience and management experience in an acute care environment is required.

Must have current CA RN license. BLS is required. ACLS preferred. Certification in specialty area preferred.


Must have thorough knowledge of the administrative and clinical areas supervised with special emphasis on

hospital and nursing standards of patient care. Must be well versed in hospital and medical staff organization

and structure; fluent in medical terminology to include diagnostic and operative procedures. Must have

comprehensive knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements, including The Joint Commission

(TJC), Department of Health Services (DHS), and Title 22 specifications. Knowledge of policies and

procedures required to access Pharmacy and dispense drugs during hours when the Pharmacy is closed.

Knowledge of drug/dose/route to provide safe administration of medications removed from Pharmacy when

Pharmacists are unavailable. Knowledge of medical records filing system and including legal requirements

with respect to HIPAA, TJC, Title XXII, PHI, COBRA and MediCare Conditions of Participation. Knowledge of

Central Distribution. Knowledge of Risk Management, Quality Improvement and Organization Policies/



Leadership experience is required. Must have experience as an RN in acute care environment. Direct supervisory/management experience is required, as is typically obtained in approximately two - four years.

Seasoned experience in psychiatric nursing - preferably in an acute in-patient setting is preferred for the position at Sutter Center for Psychiatry.


Demonstrated competency in nursing management, hospital operations and human resources. Must have

well developed interpersonal skills and communication skills, including interpersonal, presentation, written and

verbal. Requires conceptual, analytical, and problem identification/ creative resolution skills in a complex

environment. Must be skilled in facilitating/ fostering teamwork. Requires flexibility and the willingness to work

flex hours and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Must possess computer skills and knowledge required

to support a nursing information system. Proficiency in the use of equipment in the nursing department

strongly preferred, and required within 6 months on the job. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and

support implementation of a patient-focused program in a healthcare setting. Must have excellent persuasion

and conflict resolution skills to facilitate positive outcomes without formal lines of reporting relationships/
