Essentia Health Psychiatry Consult Health Registered Nurse (RN) Liaison in Duluth, Minnesota

Job Description:

The Psychiatry Consult Service Nurse Liaison’s serves as a real-time behavioral health resource for staff on the medical units of St. Mary’s Medical Center and Essentia Health Duluth. Job functions include assisting with assessment and creation of respective non-pharmacologic interventions for patients with behavioral disturbances which result in disruption of the patient’s ability to participate in care or disruption of the milieu of the medical floor. Other functions include staff education, bedside de-escalation, and assistance to the psychiatric consult service with organization and prioritization of psychiatrically ill patients awaiting psychiatric placement on medical floors.

Education Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS (minimum requirements)

  • Current registration or permit to practice in the state of employment. May be required to hold multiple state licensures, depending upon work location.

  • BLS certification (new hires must obtain within 1 month of hire) Certification must be from the American Heart Association (BLS for the Health Care Provider) or the American Red Cross (CPR for the Professional Rescuer)

  • Has a Minimum of four years’ experience as psychiatric nurse and thus maintains a working knowledge regarding a broad spectrum of mental health/behavioral conditions and their respective multi-modal interventions.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the significant connection between medical and psychological conditions and thus has an ability to view a patient in a holistic manner.

  • Possesses experience and effectiveness with verbal de-escalation of acute crises and behavioral exacerbations.

  • In accordance with legal, joint commission, and facility regulations, is able to safely apply, monitor, and discontinue behavioral restraints.

  • Possesses experience and effectiveness with writing behavioral care plans or behavioral modification plans

  • Possesses knowledge of psychiatric medications, their indications, interactions, and side effects.

  • Possesses knowledge of evidence base treatment therapy and leads the care team on treatment programing while in the medical units.

  • Certification in mental health or able to obtain certification with a year of initiation of position.

Licensure/Certification Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • When requested and in collaboration with consult team and medical staff, complete holistic assessments of patients with behavioral concerns and formulate non-pharmacological interventions/plans of care.

  • During business hours, provide real-time bedside assistance with education de-escalation and management of disruptive behaviors.

  • Provide nursing level education regarding psychiatric diagnoses and their respective pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.

  • Coach nursing staff on how to treat behavioral escalation as an emergency and how to respond to these emergencies in a succinct, consistent manner similar to that of a medical code

  • Champion a Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT)

  • Assist psychiatry consult service practitioners in identification of potential need for pharmacologic intervention.

  • Assist psychiatry consult service team in organization and prioritization of patients on medical floors in need of inpatient psychiatric placement including weekend management of bed queue

  • Act as a resource to St. Mary’s Medical Center and Essentia health Duluth medical social workers, case managers, and bedside nursing staff to educate regarding community resources and discharge planning.

  • Participate in ongoing, sometimes self-guided, evidence-based continuing education in attempt to provide care that is current, cost-effective, and based in sound research.

  • Act in professional manner to formulate and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients and co-workers.
