Holland Hospital RN - Nursing Float Pool in Holland, Michigan

Unit Description: The Nursing Float Team is a group of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) who are either Full time with a schedule, part-time with a schedule, or variable staffing pool (VSP). Following a thorough orientation period, the Nursing Float Team is expected to be competent and comfortable changing patient assignments, units, conditions, and situations. The Float Team provides staffing to the inpatient Medical/ Surgical units (5W, 4W, S/O, TU) under the direction of a dedicated Float Team Manager. To maintain competency and skill mix, the float staff does not work with patient groups in the specialty areas including ICU, Pediatrics, Emergency, Surgery, Psychiatry, Birth unit, or ATU. Although many staff members in the Float Team have schedules for their positions, the units that they work on will vary each day, and often each shift. Float Team staff are expected to be individuals who are flexible, adaptable, customer service focused, and relational. One of the many benefits of being a part of the Nursing Float Team is the opportunity to experience and contribute to the many functioning units that comprise the inpatient care team. Floating affords staff the opportunity to self-identify areas of strengths and interest while building relationships on many units.

The RN is responsible for the provision and coordination of patient centered care. The RN coordinates care to achieve desired outcomes, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by delegating and working cooperatively and collaboratively with ancillary nursing and other members of the healthcare team in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice and professional nursing performance in the clinical setting. The RN is also accountable to practice in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978, Article 15 (Health Occupations), Part 172 (Nursing). The RN must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area.

Minimum Education/Training: Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program. Effective January, 2016, any newly hired RN without a BSN will be required to obtain a BSN within 5 years of hire. Exceptions will be made for equivalent experience with Director approval. For Emergency, ICU/TU, Spine and Orthopedics, Nursing Float Pool: Completes initial and ongoing education related to stroke care.

Registration/Certification or License Required: RN - Licensed to practice in the State of Michigan (or completed by end of orientation). Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider Certification (or completed within 60 days of hire). For ICU/TU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Emergency, Urgent Care, PACU, Surgical Center, Endoscopy: ACLS Certification or completed within one year of hire. For Birth Center: NRP Certification or completed within one year of hire. Preferred Education: Bachelor's of Science Nursing (BSN). Certification in specialty area (CCRN, CRN, CNOR, CEN, etc).

Preferred Experience: Recent hospital experience and/or previous nursing practice experience. 2 years prior RN experience in desired specialty area. Prior experience with technology common to specialty area (i.e., cardiac monitors, IV pumps). Experience with Windows, Internet etc. Bilingual. For Emergency, ICU/TU, Spine and Orthopedics, and Nursing Float Pool: Prior experience caring for stroke patients.

Physical Requirements: Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Push/pull +/- 150-200 lbs. (Patients on bed, stretcher). Lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (ie. Patient). Occasional sitting. Frequent standing, walking. Frequent twisting, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling. Continuous keyboard use. Continuous talking, hearing.

Other Requirements: Proficient in English. Verbal and written communication skills. Computer literate: Proficient with Microsoft Office. Ability to multi-task and tolerate high levels of mental stress/strain.
