SSM Health Nurse Practitioner - General Surgery - Mt. Vernon, IL in Mt. Vernon, Illinois

SSM Health – Illinois seeks a Nurse Practitioner to join our established General Surgery team. The successful candidate will join our Medical Group and will be affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, in a full-time position.

This is an employed position with SSM Health – Good Samaritan Hospital, a premier hospital system located in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, where easy access is available to St. Louis, Chicago, Evansville, Indianapolis, Lexington, Louisville, Memphis and Nashville.

Highlights of the opportunity are:

  • Facility is a not-for-profit Catholic institution affiliated with SSM Health

  • Clinic mostly position, with hospital rounding/consultations required (M-F) with the possibility to grow to include OR work

  • No night or weekend call

  • Successful candidate will manage the following types of patients:

  • General surgery and Bariatric new and follow up patients

  • General surgery inpatient consultations and follow up patients

  • Will cover both General and Bariatric Surgical services

  • Will help in covering hospital patients including admissions, discharges and helping with treatment plans.

  • ED and ICU work will also be part of the hospital work

  • Assist the program with hospital call during the week (M-F 8 am - 5 pm)

Successful candidates must have/be:

  • Successful completion of an accredited NP school

  • Hold current Board Certification.

  • Experienced provider is preferred, however a new graduates will not be excluded, with preference given to those with previous Surgical Nursing experience.

  • Active Illinois APN license is preferred.

Under the direction of the Supervising Physician(s) and in association with hospital staff, assists in the delivery of quality medical care. Designation of Time: At least 50% of time designated to Surgical/Hospital Procedures.


  • Attends initially a patient in any setting to obtain a personal medical history, perform an appropriate physical examination, and record and present pertinent data concerning the patient in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician.

  • Performs various procedures under the supervision of the physician.

  • Perform advanced surgical procedures according to privileging credentials.

  • Assists the physicians in the hospital by making patient rounds, recording patient progress notes, compiling and recording discharge summaries, and accurately writing and executing orders under the supervision of a physician and with physician.

  • Performs independently evaluative and treatment procedures necessary to provide an appropriate response to life-threatening emergency situations.

  • Facilitates referral of patients to other appropriate community health care facilities, agencies and resources.

  • Issues written prescription orders for drugs under the supervision of the physician.

  • Assists in the delivery of medical care to the patient by reviewing and monitoring treatment and therapy plans.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Master's degree from nationally accredited Nurse Practitioner program


  • Two years' nursing experience


  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.

  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare crawling and running.
