Harborview Medical Center has an outstanding leadership opportunity for Nurse Manager position for our In-Patient Acute Psychiatry units (5WA & 5WB). The Nurse Manager has 24-hour accountability and responsibility for managing the nursing unit to provide safe, efficient and quality patient centered care. The Nurse Manager directs and coordinates all activities of the patient care unit including: * plans, implements, and evaluates unit programs to meet specific patient care needs, * selects and supervises unit staff, * plans and manages the unit budget, and * provides leadership to promote professional practice. The Nurse Manager represents the unit staff and provides leadership in the Division of Nursing and the Medical Center as a whole through participation in the decision-making process, support, and development of policies and programs. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: I. Patient Care Management: Promotes creative approaches to patient centered care based on the dynamic health care delivery environment and nursing practice standards. Assures that all staff function within the appropriate scope of practice and that nursing process is utilized in planning and delivering care. Initiates mechanisms to resolve problems related to patient care and nursing services and arrives at timely, appropriate solutions. Contributes to the development of patient care standards by promoting and participating in unit, departmental and medical center programs/committees (e.g. Risk Management, Health and Safety, Quality Assessment and Improvement). II. Quality Assessment & Improvement: Develops and maintains a monitoring and evaluation process designed to effectively use resources to improve the quality of care and services provided on the unit. Participates in development and implementation of quality assessment and improvement programs across units/specialties. III. Safety: Coordinates interdepartmental efforts to facilitate a safe environment for patient care. IV. Personnel Management: Manages personnel for unit including selection, hiring, orientation, scheduling, coaching, staff development, evaluating, counseling, and recommending appropriate disciplinary action when necessary. Promotes clinical and managerial leadership and professional development of the health care team through such means as role modeling, delegation of duties, guidance, teaching, and effective communications. Maintains a unit climate which fosters job satisfaction and professional growth. V. Team Building/Communications: Develops and maintains relationships with unit staff, medical directors, departmental managers, interdisciplinary patient care teams, and hospital administrative staff to ensure coordination of activities, programs and policies. VI. Financial Management: Prepares operating and capital budgets for the unit compatible with Medical Center objectives. Monitors overall unit performance to ensure compliance with appropriate standards, resources, and productivity targets and manages within the allocated budget. Identifies and explores ways to develop a cost-effective environment and establishes accountability within the unit for cost-effective delivery of nursing care. VII. Leadership: Directs and coordinates all activities in a patient care unit which includes planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating all activities for optimal unit effectiveness. Participates in departmental policy development and interpretation for members of the health care team. Investigates and implements change based on sound principles of management practice to advance departmental and hospital objectives. Evaluates and assumes responsibility for the outcomes of management decisions and institutes appropriate corrective actions as needed. Contributes to the development of the Nursing Management Team on an individual basis and through group process. VIII. Professional Development: Demonstrates professional responsibility and leadership through participation in hospital, University and professional activities. Demonstrates responsibility for own professional growth through pursuit of work related experiences and educational opportunities
