    Position Summary:

    To coordinate all activities of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program. This includes the development, implementation, and evaluation of the SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) program, recruitment, hiring, and orientation of applicants. Research and update curriculum ensuring current practice to improve the quality of care received by victims of violent crimes through direct and indirect patient care, professional and public education, consultation, development of standards and protocols, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research.

    Qualifications:

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s in Nursing

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Registered Nurse (RN) Illinois, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within one year of start date. Certificate of Completion of Illinois Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training (A/A SANE) or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Adult/Adolescent national certification (SANE-A) required at hire. Certificate of Completion of Illinois Pediatric/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training (P/A SANE) or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Pediatric/Adolescent national certification (SANE-P) required within one year of start date. TNS preferred. Driver's License required.

Experience Requirement:

Two (2) years of nurse experience

Essential Functions:

  • Possesses a thorough theoretical knowledge on the management of the sexual assault survivor, the collection of biological forensic/trace samples and the maintenance of chain of custody.

  • Acts as a resource to staff in current state legislation and maintains knowledge to ensure program functioning. Available to staff to provide support and guidance when not on-site.

  • Recruits, prepares and provides orientation, and performs evaluation of sexual assault nurse examiners in the SANE program. Monitors patients and documentation of sexual assault victims, identifies variances in care and provides reeducation where needed to maintain a standard of care in the overall evaluation and treatment of this patient population.

  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate the SANE program.

  • Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and protocols for the Carle Health SANE program.

  • Participates in professional organizations and continuing education in the field of forensic nursing.

  • Provide objective forensic evaluation for victims of sexual assault.

  • Provide comprehensive and general professional nursing care that assesses, evaluates, identifies and implements care to restore and promote all aspects of health for the patient following sexual assault.

  • Maintain required continuing education requirements for SANE.

  • Provide initial crisis intervention for victims of sexual assault.

  • Perform head to toe exam of sexual assault survivor.

  • Collect Illinois State Police Evidence Collection Kit following chain of evidence procedure.

  • Treat patients according to medical protocol.

  • Document objective and subjective findings from the sexual assault.

  • Adhere to scope and standards of Forensic Nursing practice and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner standards of practice.
